‘Minority Women Professionals Conference Tour’ set to launch this weekend in the Bay Area

The first ever Minority Women Professionals (MWPs) conference tour, (MWPs are MVPs), will kick-off on January 28, 2017 at Preservation Park in Oakland, CA and will feature a series of guest speakers, workshops, networking and mentorship opportunities aimed to inspire and empower Minority Women Professionals (MWPs) from diverse backgrounds and professions, while also equipping them with essential tools and skills to “survive and thrive” in their professions.

This event, which will be the 1st of a multi-city national conference series targeting Minority Women Professionals (MWPs), will feature a number of prominent Bay Area women leaders and speakers, including UCSF professionals, excited to embrace their differences and use their authenticities to build communities focused on career advancement and lifting each other up.

With knowledge of intersectional discrimination that exists, the conference creator, Dr. J. Nwando Olayiwola, published the book Minority Women Professionals (MWPs) are MVPs! where she highlights the “Ten secret ingredients in the secret sauce of MWPs.” Each ingredient offers professional insight on the actions necessary for thriving as an MWP and is the foundation of topics at the conferences. Dr. Olayiwola hopes to position women to fulfill their dreams.

“The time is now,” said Dr. Olayiwola. “Minority women professionals are so essential to our workforce and communities and we have to make sure they know it, embrace it, and excel.”

Hosted by Dr. Olayiwola through her company, Inspire Health Solutions, the Bay Area conference, expected to host over 100 women, will not only discuss strategies and tools for succeeding in the workplace but also celebrate the achievements of career-oriented women of diverse backgrounds, including women of color, of non-dominant faiths, with disabilities, of diverse sexual orientations and ages, and of various national origins. Additional speakers include co-host Dr. Pooja Mittal, Dr. Renee Navarro, Dr. Christina Mangurian, Dr. Kimberly Chang, Ms. Iguehi James, MPH, Zahra Billoo, Esq, Ana Mazur-Allan, MA, and Mina Wilson, MA. The conference will also feature local women entrepreneurs, performers, and innovators.

Famed TEDx speaker Janine Shepherd, who is internationally renowned, secured the lunchtime keynote. After being traumatically disabled in a truck accident, the Australian World Champion skier has since been a tremendous voice for women with disabilities and is the author of the new book, Defiant.

“A broken body is not a broken person,” Ms. Shepherd remarked. “I want to share the power of defiance with the women at this conference and encourage them to harness it.”
