Yung Blood, Urban Outlaw, Bi Parel, Watermelon Social Club, Dope, De Mil, RK Menswear participated in the South Africa Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2018 held at Sandton City Shopping Centre from October 24-27, 2017. Here are highlights from their collections:
Yung Blood Apparel
Kabelo hails from Seshego, Limpopo. He completed his studies at the Vaal University of Technology in 2016. His designs are all about the world around him. He is producing affordable garments for his hip-and-happening township fashion leaders. His emphasis is on gender neutral clothing that can be worn on the street from daybreak to party time.

Lameez is a young menswear designer to watch. She finished her studies at the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy. She is passionate about what she does and enjoys the process of creating and breathing life into her designs. She draws inspiration from living life at full speed daily. Lameez was the winner of the Edcon Design Innovation Challenge 2017.

Shaylene is a young star that has grabbed the vibrant retail environment with both hands, as she believes that she’ll gain a holistic understanding of this aspect of business that is essential to building her successful gender-neutral fashion label. She finished her studies at The University of Johannesburg in 2016.

The Watermelon Social Club
From the University of Johannesburg, Sthembiso loves designing simple but innovative unisex garments with a hint of street-savvy and rebellion. He’s hardworking and immersed in fashion. He is a young talent on the horizon and someone to look out for.

Andile Cele trained at the Durban University of Technology and says “although our roots are in Jozi, the world is our stadium.” He runs a Streetwear store in Downtown Johannesburg and sees himself as a leader in ready-to-wear sports luxury clothing. In 7 years he has launched five individual lines under the DOPE brand: DOPEorange, which features streetwear influenced by hip-hop and youth culture, DOPEwhite, a trendy collection that incorporates modern tastes, DOPEblack, an experimental line with a more formal feel, DOPEplus comprises quality leather goods and DOPEhomme which uses deluxe materials to set tomorrow’s trends.

Coenrad De Mol, the designer of luxury label De Mil, was the winner of the 4th Scouting Menswear Competition in 2016. From his first designs in 1997, specializing in bridal and theatrical costumes, he moved onto menswear in 2007. Although a master patternmaker and a true constructionist, he follows a more alternative new world approach to clothing that blurs the gender lines.
The relationship between fashion and the ‘man in the street’ has always been a curious one. Egalitarian by Keys Fashion is at the forefront of the anti-feminist movement where feminine masculinity can assume its place within the fashion industry – an industry where men are the protagonists of their own radical rethinking.
